Gamers8 2023: Everything You Need To Know & Controversy Explained

Gamers8 is set to return for the second iteration of the Saudi Arabian esports festival, which debuted in 2022. This year, Gamers8 promises to be even bigger, better, and with a substantially bigger prize pool, divided among at least nine esports tournaments.

Organised by Saudi Esports Federation, 2023 Gamers8 is set to take place in Summer 2023 over eight weeks, and it’ll include esports tournaments, music concerts, and the Next World Forum conference.

As promised by organisers, Gamers8 will be bigger than in 2022, and that’ll be true in every way; from the number of activities to the total prize pool, the 2023 Gamers8 is set to become one of the biggest esports events of the year.

Gamers8 Controversy Explained

In 2022 Gamers8 was met with controversy and criticism by some esports players and teams who refused to compete in an event hosted by Saudi Arabia. That had to do with Saudi Arabia being accused of sport-swashing in an attempt to overshadow the human rights abuse that’s happening in the country.

This led to Moist Esports, an esports organisation which is mainly known for its Rocket League team, refusing to attend the Gamers8 Rocket League tournament after its owner decided that the team won’t be associated with a country “that does not recognise LGBTQ+ people as human beings.”

Besides Moist Esports withdrawing from the event and a few players complaining on social media, the whole thing did not affect Saudi Arabia’s involvement in esports. On the contrary, Saudi Arabia has continued to invest in esports as the country works towards its 2019 goal of making Saudi Arabia a hub for esports.

Most notably, Saudi Arabia government-owned Savvy Games Group (SGG) bought ESL and FACEIT for $1.5 billion in 2022. As a result, ESL will serve as the main production company for the upcoming Gamers8 festival.
