Golden Guardians and FlyQuest will meet on Saturday, April 8, in the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) 2023 Spring lower bracket finals to determine which LoL squad will join Cloud9 in the finals.
FlyQuest Favoured To Defeat Golden Guardians
FlyQuest enter this match as 1.44 favourites (with bet365), which isn’t too surprising. They looked like the best LCS team for the first half of the regular season, and even though they lost the regular season title race to Cloud9, FlyQuest were still a class above any other team.
In the LCS 2023 Spring Playoffs, FlyQuest did what was expected of them and demolished 100 Thieves (3-0) in the upper bracket semifinals. Unfortunately, they were far less impressive against Cloud9, who defeated them (3-0) for the third time this season in the upper bracket finals and pushed them down to the lower bracket.
In their most recent series against Cloud9, FlyQuest got completely stomped, which put a huge question mark on their chances to win the LCS crown. However, there’s always some overreaction to results like that, and it doesn’t take away from the fact that FlyQuest are an excellent team.
A Well-Coached Team
Golden Guardians weren’t as impressive through the regular season as FlyQuest, but they did enjoy a very explosive run from Week 3 to Week 6 when they won seven straight games. Unfortunately, they then cooled down and won just two of their next seven series, ending the year with a 9-9 record.
Golden Guardians found traction again in the playoffs and defeated 100 Thieves (3-2) and Evil Geniuses (3-0). Their win against 100T was a bit of a slugfest; however, GG handled Evil Geniuses decisively, so it’s fair to ask ourselves whether Golden Guardians have a chance to win the LCS crown.
There’s no denying that Golden Guardians are a solid team, and it’s evident that they’re well-coached. However, GG doesn’t have as much talent as FlyQuest and Cloud9, so what happens when they get skill checked?
Admittedly, GG doesn’t have as many star players and, on paper, looks like the weakest team of the remaining three. But in the end, does individual talent even matter if a team has a very good macro, knows how to move around the map and plays like a cohesive unit?
FlyQuest vs Golden Guardians Prediction
FlyQuest have side selection for this match and better players, but are they more likely to win? The side selection and superior talent work in their favour; however, we can’t ignore that Golden Guardians have been playing better league this season.
Even if we compare the teams lane by lane, there isn’t a massive gap talent-wise. Admittedly, FlyQuest have a much better bottom lane (possibly the best in the league), which could be where GG will struggle. But elsewhere, I’m not concerned about the outsiders.
So how do we approach betting on this match?
Golden Guardians look like an interesting play at 2.98. They have the tools to defeat FlyQuest, and as long as their bottom lane doesn’t crumble, GG have a legitimate chance to come out ahead. However, the side selection won’t work in their favour, so I prefer GG with a map advantage.
