League of Legends Betting Tutorials and News

Check out the latest League of Legends news and everything related to betting on Riot Games’ Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game.

League of Legends Schedule & Results

Esports has found its permanent place in the world of betting and is nowadays available on essentially any online betting site. However, there are differences between bookmakers that offer LoL betting markets and the best betting sites, that can offer an adequate betting experience.

Here, you can find our top picks for the best League of Legends bookmakers every LoL bettor should know about.

Sharp & Semi Sharp Bookmakers

LoL betting markets are easily accessible on numerous online betting sites, and that includes traditional sportsbooks as well as esports bookmakers.

Those looking for the best esports betting sites should know that it’s also possible to bet on LoL with sharp bookmakers such as Pinnacle and Betcris as well as semi-sharp bookmakers like Bookmaker.eu and BetOnline (or Sportsbetting.ag). Between the four there’s no clear winner for the best choice; however, the latter is best suited for Canadian and US bettors.

We should note that some sharp betting sites come with location restrictions and aren’t accessible directly to some punters. Luckily, there’s a way to bypass that.

Betting Brokers

Some bettors won’t be able to access specific betting sites directly and will have to do it through a betting broker – a service that legally provides accounts for exchanges and bookmakers that are otherwise inaccessible.

One of the recommended choices is PremiumTradings or Sportmarket, both licenced and trusted betting brokers, which offer accounts for major sportsbooks, including Pinnacle (PS3838), 18betinasia, Babibet, as well as exchanges such as Orbit and Fair Exchange (Betfair clones).

Soft Bookmakers

League of Legends is one of the world’s biggest and most popular esports titles. So, it’s not surprising to learn that most bookmakers, including traditional sportsbooks (bet365, William Hill, Unibet), offer LoL esports betting markets.

While everyone is after the best League of Legends betting site, there isn’t necessarily one top LoL bookmaker we can recommend, granted Bet365 is a solid choice and should be considered alongside an account on a sharp bookmaker.

Ultimately, is’t always better to have accounts with multiple betting sites. With that, punters have the option to find and wager with the best odds, as well as look to exploit any welcome bonus offers and free bet promotions and dabble in matched betting.

If you want to know more about the main differences between sharp and soft bookmakers, check out the article below.

Betting Exchanges

Even betting exchanges will offer LoL betting markets (albeit liquidity is not ideal, especially early on), expanding bettors’ options when deciding which platforms to use to bet on LoL. Sadly, there are only two options – Betfair and Smarkets.

  • If you cant access Betfair, you can use a clone. We recommend either Orbit (3% commission via PT) or Fair Exchange (3% commission via SM).

Everything You Need to Know about the LoL Esports Structure

League of Legends has a well-developed esports ecosystem featuring regional leagues across the world. While there are some domestic, community-held or lower-tier events happening, those will rarely have more than match winner markets available on any esports betting platform.

Some might, but the main focus of the LoL esports scene is the international tournaments and primary leagues, which are divided into regions – four of which are considered “Major Regions” (LPL, LCK, LEC, and LCS).

Domestic LoL Esports Structure

The domestic LoL esports leagues involve franchised circuits, including:

  • League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC)
  • League of Legends Championship Series (LCS)
  • League of Legends Pro League (LPL)
  • League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK)
  • Pacific Championship Series (PCS)
  • Vietnam Championship Series (VCS)
  • Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLOL)
  • League of Legends Japan League (LJL)
  • League of Legends Circuit Oceania (LCO)*
  • Liga Latinoamérica (LLA)

*integrated into the PCS

The regional leagueshave second-division leagues for academy teams; however, there is no promotion-relegation system in place. This allows teams competing in the top-tier circuit to field academy rosters who compete in the second-division leagues and attend various second-division League of Legends tournaments.

Splits & Playoffs

The regional leagues all follow a similar structure. Each season is divided into splits, which feed into the knockout stage (playoffs). The latter serve as competition to determine the region’s champions and qualifiers for international tournaments, including the Mid-Season Invitational and the LoL World Championship.

The league format across the 10 leagues is similar; there are some outliers, namely European LEC, which has in 2023 introduced three splits (Winter, Spring, and Summer) and has “Groups” stage between the regular season the the playoffs Typically, the leagues have two (Spring-Summer) splits, with the top-performing teams advancing to the playoffs.

Throughout the season, teams compete for Championship Points (CP), which dictate which teams are worthy of attending the League of Legends World Championsip as the region’s representatives. However, each league has its own LoL Worlds qualifying process, with the Summer Playoffs champions typically earning a direct bye to LoL Worlds.

International LoL Esports Structure

While it is one of the world’s most popular esports titles, League of Legends, unlike Dota 2, Rocket League, Counter-Strike, and other big esports games, doesn’t have as many international events. At the top level, there are just two international competitions – the Mid-Season Invitational and League of Legends World Championship.

While the LoL esports scene would benefit from having more international events, the current structure of its ecosystem doesn’t allow for it.

Mid-Season Invitational

The first international event of the year is the Mid-Season Invitational. It typically takes place in late April-May and is widely regarded as one of the biggest esports competitions in the world.

The event takes place shortly after the conclusion of the first split of the season (Spring Split). It welcomes the champions and runners-up from each Major region and Spring Split champions from minor regions.

Throughout history, the MSI was not regarded as a very important tournament since it didn’t offer anything for the teams besides bragging rights. Still, it remains one of the biggest LoL events of the year.

League of Legends World Championship

LoL Worlds is the final event of a League of Legends esports season and one of the biggest esports tournaments in the world. It welcomes the world’s best 22 LoL esports teams who face off for the Summoner’s Cup and the title of world champions.

The LoL World Championship is divided into three stages – play-ins, the group stage, and the knockout stage. In 2023, LoL Worlds transformed the group stage into the Swiss Stage, with more format changes expected to happen in 2024.

The Play-In stage welcomes champions of smaller regional leagues and bottom-seeded teams from the Major regions, who fight for a spot in the main stage. From there, only the top eight teams advance to the single-elimination stage, where they fight for a spot in the grand final.

Like the MSI, LoL Worlds assigns more spots to stronger regions, including Korea (4 seeds), China (4 seeds), Europe (3 seeds) and North America (3 seeds). The PCS and VCT are the only other leagues with more than one seed (2 apiece), while the remaining leagues all get one seed apiece.

The number of seeds can change.

General Tips for Betting on League of Legends

What is League of Legends, how is it played, and which are the best LoL betting strategies – you can find that and more in our League of Legends betting guide. Learn the basics, advanced tactics, and more with our tutorials for newcomers and LoL betting experts.

League of Legends bears many similarities to traditional sports betting, but it’s quite different in some aspects. Still, if you’re coming from sports betting and are new to betting on League of Legends, you don’t have to re-learn everything; rather, remember that there are other things to keep in mind when selecting your bets.

Game’s Meta

League of Legends meta i.e. the optimal way of playing the game, is always changing, mainly due to Riot Games releasing updates and changes for its MOBA title. Moreover, the meta develops differently across regions, so something that works in Europe might not work as well in China or Korea.

Consider:

  • Each region has its own optimal way of playing the game
  • The meta sees the most drastic shift during international tournaments (MSI, LoL Worlds), when teams from different regions clash
  • Updates and patches have a significant impact on the game’s meta
  • The team’s understanding of the meta is very important, and it shows in their drafts

Drafts

No League of Legends game is the same due to the pre-game draft, where the teams and players pick and ban champions they want to and don’t want to play against. While drafts have no value in pre-match betting, the draft process is crucial for in-play bettors trying to figure out which squad will destroy the other team’s Nexus first.

Consider:

  • The way a team drafts will have a significant impact on how the game is played
  • A worse team with a better draft is more likely to win than a good team with a poor draft
  • While drafts have an impact on the course of the game, even good drafts won’t be enough to overcome huge quality gaps

Past H2H Results Aren’t As Important

When betting on any sport or esport, you have to consider the teams’ past head-to-head results, but those don’t hold as much weight in LoL. Due to the meta shifts and common roster changes between splits, two teams will look and play much differently compared to the last time they played.

*This applies only to games that are played across different splits*

Consider:

  • LoL teams frequently change their rosters
  • The format in which the previous games were played are important (Bo1≠Bo3)

Match Format

There is a big difference between a best-of-one (Bo1) and a best-of-three (Bo3) series. In LoL and across most other esports, Bo1s have a much higher chance of an upset result in contrast to Bo3, so you should never overestimate a team’s Bo1 record.

Particularly in Europe (LEC) and North America (LCS), where teams play Bo1s throughout the regular season, weaker teams will win more games but then struggle to emulate that success in the playoffs – typically played as Bo3.

Consider:

  • A team’s standing at the end of the regular season does not accurately represent their strength in the playoffs (for Bo1 regular season and Bo3 playoff formats)
  • Longer-format games are much tougher to win for the underdogs compared to Bo1s
  • Bo1s typically lead to more upsetsread more here; Link
