LEC Spring 2024 Week 1 Preview – Day 1 Betting Picks

League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) 2024 Spring Split is set to kick off on Saturday, March 9, with the opening round of the superweek, as ten European LoL esports teams return to the arena to battle for the LEC trophy.

Some of the rosters made changes between the LEC 2024 Winter and LEC 2024 Spring split, but for the most part, the league has remained the same without any significant shuffles that would heavily affect the balance of power. So can we expect the same squads to dominate the split?

Team Vitality vs Team Heretics Betting Pick

When: Saturday, March 9, 17:00 CET

Team Heretics parted ways with mid laner Luka “Perkz” Perković and replaced him with Artur “Zwyroo” Trojan, in what was a somewhat unexpected change. However, considering how Perkz has been playing so far this season, this just might be an upgrade or, at the very least, a sidegrade.

Despite everything Perkz has accomplished throughout his career, he was arguably the weakest link of Team Heretics last split, so it’s reasonable to believe that Heretics will look better. That said, seeing how the management handled the change puts a huge question mark above Team Heretics.

From what I can tell, the players weren’t aware of Perkz’s departure, and there are rumours that it wasn’t a nice departure either. The announcement video was a disaster as well, clearly showing something went down. As some might say the “vibe” doesn’t feel good.

Vitality were far from perfect last season, but they did perform better than expected. This is still a very volatile team that can show up or completely fall apart, and while I’m not a big fan of backing Vitality as favourites, they still played a few competitive series in the LEC 2024 Winter, and they’re up against a team that clearly has some internal issues.

Fnatic vs Rogue Betting Pick

When: Saturday, March 9, 18:00 CET

Rogue weren’t great in LEC 2024 Winter and even that might be an understatement seeing how they ended the split 2-7. However, Rogue should’ve done much better.

This is a talented roster with enough quality to compete for a strong finish, and while things didn’t work out last split, there’s a reason to believe Rogue will do better in the LEC 2024 Spring. They’re up against Fnatic, who were arguably the second-best team in Europe, but they had some weird decision-making which cost them an appearance in the finals.

Ultimately, Fnatic will likely remain the second-best team in LEC, but they probably shouldn’t be priced as 1.28 favourites against sneakily good Rogue for the first match of the split.

  • Prediction: Rogue +7.5 kills – 1.90 at Unibet, 1 unit

Team BDS vs G2 Esports Betting Pick

When: Saturday, March 9, 19:00 CET

Team BDS performed well in the LEC 2024 Winter, but they ran out of steam in the playoffs and placed third. This team still has issues which tend to show in best-of series, however, during the regular season, Team BDS will likely remain a tough team to prepare for.

G2 Esports are your no.1 team in Europe, and it’s not even close. There’s not much else to say here, as it would be very bold to say G2 Esports aren’t the clear favourites to win the split. However, when we talk LoL esports betting odds, it’s easy to argue that G2 Esports are too pricey for a Bo1 against Team BDS, in the first game of the split.

This is a similar situation than the previous game – a strong team against weaker, yet competent squad in a Bo1. I’m taking a swing with Team BDS.

  • Prediction: Team BDS +8.5 kills – 1.83 at Unibet, 1 unit

Karmine Corp vs GIANTX Betting Pick

When: Saturday, March 9, 20:00 CET

Karmine Corp replaced their coach this offseason but kept the roster intact, so the question is “how much better will Karmine Corp perform this split?”. It’s not like Karmine Corp lacks talent, but they were garbage tier last split, and just changing a coach might not resolve the issue.

A fresh start will definitely benefit them giving KC a chance to restart and forget about what happened in LEC 2024 Winter. But a closer look at KC’s performances from last split reveal that there were many issues this team had and I find it tough to believe they managed to resolve them.

GIANTX are more than capable of winning this series, and as 2.10 underdogs, they might be worth a look. But I would want a better offer to pull the trigger.

  • Prediction: None

MAD Lions vs SK Gaming Betting Pick

When: Saturday, March 9, 21:00 CET

MAD Lions did surprisingly well last split and made the LEC 2024 Winter playoffs with a roster full of rookies. Whether they’ll manage to keep the wind in their sails and put together another competitive split remains to be seen, but MAD Lions did show some good qualities.

SK Gaming, like MAD Lions, had a good split, but they just couldn’t make it past the finish line. They’ll likely remain competitive, and if things fall into place, SK could compete for a top-four finish. But it’s too early to say.

Based on what they’ve shown, the MAD Lions are the better team, but at 1.44, they’re a bit overrated. It’s possible that MAD Lions are simply that good, however, we’ve seen them produce some volatile games in Bo1s and it’s entirely possible that LEC 2024 Winter was a honeymoon phase for the new squad.

  • Prediction: SK Gaming to win – 2.66 at Pinnacle, 1 unit
