League of Legends World Championship 2023 Tournament Betting Preview

The League of Legends World Championship 2023 is set to kick off on Tuesday, October 6, welcoming the world’s top LoL esports teams vying for the Summoner’s Cup and the right to have their names etched in the history of LoL esports.

The 2023 League of Legends World Championship is almost here!

As the biggest and one of the most-watched esports events of the year, LoL Worlds 2023 also promises to offer plenty of excellent betting opportunities for us to explore, including a couple of future picks, which we’ll take a closer look at in this betting preview.

LoL Worlds 2023 Information

League of Legends World Championship 2023 will kick off on Tuesday, October 6, with the Play-In stage, where some minor region teams will fight for one of two spots leading into the main event, leading to the knockouts.

The top two Play-In teams will then be seeded into the main event, which has a different format this season. Instead of groups, the LoL Words 2023 Main Event will be a Swiss Stage, with all 22 teams playing in a Swiss-style format with five rounds.

Teams with three wins will advance to the knockouts, while the teams with three losses get eliminated from the tournament. All matches in this stage are best-of-one (Bo1), except for Qualification and Elimination matches which are best-of-three (Bo3).

The Knockout stage will welcome eight teams from the Swiss Stage, who will be seeded into a single-elimination bracket, with all matches, including the finals, played as best-of-five.

LoL Worlds 2023 Favourites

JD Gaming (2.25 at bet365) are the clear favourite to win LoL Worlds 2023 and complete the Golden Road, and it’s very hard to argue with this logic. JDG have proven themselves as the most dominant team of the year, with two LPL titles and an MSI 2023 trophy, which alone is a strong testament to their quality.

The individual talent on this roster is as good as it can get, and overall, this team is nothing short of excellent. But from a betting perspective, you have to have a really good reason to bet on JDG at 2.25, which translates to a 44.4% implied probability.

Not to say that JD Gaming can’t win, but expecting any team to have a 44.4% likelihood of winning LoL Worlds 2023 is absurd, not to mention that the favourites historically underperform at LoL Worlds. Last year, JDG, TOP Esports, and Gen.G were the main three favourites, but none made the finals. Instead, we saw DRX complete their Cinderella Story and won despite being one of the underdogs.

I’m not saying that another underdog will win, but it’s very difficult to make a good case to bet on JD Gaming at 2.25.

Home-crowd favourites Gen.G are priced as second favourites at 6.00, which is a huge jump from 2.25 and implies that JD Gaming are three times as likely to win LoL Worlds 2023, which isn’t fair. Not because GenG are not strong but because JDG aren’t that much stronger.

Gen.G are a very good team, with excellent players in all the right places, so it’s more than fair to say that they can do well, and if they get lucky with the daw, I can see a world where they finish top-two. This creates an interesting opportunity to back them at 3.50 on the “To Reach Final” market.

Third-favourites, LNG Esports (7.00), have another problem they’ll have to overcome to win LoL Worlds 2023. They had a solid run through the LPL 2023 Summer and were the only team to cause JDG issues, but while this team has the tools to be good, LNG are also a very one-dimensional which won’t do them any favours on the international stage.

LNG are one of my least favourite bets on the outright markets, as there is no clear explanation why they should be third-favourites to go all the way.

Outsiders That Can Impress

I don’t like any of the main favourites at the offered esports betting odds, but I would keep a closer eye on two outsiders.

Bilibili Gaming are priced at 10.00 to win LoL Worlds 2023, which implies that they’re weaker than T1, LNG Esports, Gen.G, and JD Gaming. The latter might be true, considering BLG have not beaten JD Gaming once this season. But compared to other teams?

Bilibili Gaming have had a very good run through the 2023 season, and while they couldn’t make it past JDG to win a trophy domestically, they still placed second at the LPL 2023 Spring Playoffs and MSI 2023, won the LPL 2023 Summer regular season and claimed silver from LPL 2023 Summer Playoffs.

This is one of the most consistent and undeniably one of the best teams this year. How you perceive their chances to win LoL Worlds 2023 entirely depends on how strong you believe the LPL is. If the Chinese league is the strongest, then BLG are easily the second-best team in the worldโ€ฆ priced at 10.00 to win LoL Worlds.

Dplus KIA (15.00) is another team I wouldn’t sleep on. Dplus KIA haven’t had the most explosive run through the season, and even that is an understatement, with their fifth-place finishes in the LCK 2023 Spring and LCK 2023 Summer Playoffs. But as the season neared the end, Dplus KIA seemed to have things figured out.

This has been a sleeper team in the LCK, which just so happens to struggle to find their identity until the final weeks of the year. Not to mention that we have to put some weight on the veteran experience, which Dplus KIA have.

Heo “ShowMaker” Su and Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu won the LoL Worlds together in 2020 and reached the finals in 2021, Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu is the defending world champion, and Kim “Canna” Chang-dong made the semifinal in 2021. Beyond the experience, it’s completely likely that ShowMaker and Canyon find their 2020 form and just steamroll the entire LoL Worlds 2023 as we know they can.

LoL Worlds 2023 Predictions

I really like Bilibili Gaming and Dplus KIA as two outsiders to win LoL Worlds 2023. A bet on Dplus KIA is hoping that its key players perform to the best of their ability, in which case, Dplus KIA can easily contest a top-three finish. On the other side, Bilibili Gaming only really need to avoid JD Gaming in the knockout stage, assuming they haven’t figured out how to beat JD Gaming yet.

Bilibili Gaming are an extremely good team and shouldn’t be priced at 10.00 on LoL Worlds 2023 outright markets. But as with any team, they’ll need a lucky draw, which will open up their road to the top.

As noted above, Gen.G to reach the finals at 3.50 is an interesting choice and quite a generous offer, but with the LCK champions, much of their success will come down to how the meta develops.

There are many teams at LoL Worlds 2023 you can make a strong case for at the offered betting odds โ€“ besides LNG Esports and JD Gaming โ€“ and it wouldn’t be too wrong to add a sneaky bet on G2 Esports at 26.00.

As weak as the West is, G2 Esports are extremely well-coached and very adaptable, which will work in their favour so they can do some damage. But at this point, we might as well have five wagers and hope something sticks.
