MSI 2023 Play-In Stage Day 1 Betting Picks

The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational 2023 kicks off on Tuesday, May 2, with a pair of bouts on the opening round of the Play-In stage in PSG Talon vs DetonatioN FocusMe and G2 Esports vs LOUD. Here you can find our betting preview for the day with top LoL betting picks.

PSG Talon vs DetonatioN FocusMe

When: Tuesday, May 2, at 13:00 BST

PSG Talon and DetonatioN FocusMe will clash on Tuesday, May 2, in the opening match of the Mid-Season Invitational 2023. It will mark the first time the two LoL esports squads will meet on the international stage, which raises some interesting questions, namely how the two regions’ playstyles will match up.

As the Pacific Championship Series (PCS) champions – which is considered one of the best minor regions in the world, PSG Talon enter this match as 1.44 favourites, which looks about right. PSG Talon have historically performed well at international events and last year placed fifth-sixth at MSI 2022.

This year, PSG Talon field a different roster, so we can’t put too much weight on their past success; however, they’ve accomplished a lot more with the current lineup domestically, so it’s fair to feel optimistic about their chances to achieve something at the MSI 2023.

DetonatioN FocusMe are a known face for LoL esports fans as a squad that has consistently qualified for international LoL events as Japanese representatives. This split, DetonatioN FocusMe claimed their 15th LJL title and fifth consecutive, once again proving that they’re by far the most dominant team from their region.

Even though that hasn’t changed in years, DFM have looked significantly better this split, namely thanks to the return of mid-laner Lee “Aria” Ga-eul, who re-signed with DetonatioN FocusMe after spending a year competing with KT Rolster in the LCK. Besides Aria, DFM also promoted top laner Haruki “tol2” Shibata for the 2023 season but have otherwise kept their roster intact.

This DFM lineup is very similar to the previous iterations of this roster but stronger. Yet I still don’t see them doing well against PSG Talon.

PSG Talon completely overhauled their roster and still had an excellent season in a very strong league, which we must value higher than anything DFM have achieved. I wouldn’t even be shocked to see PSG Talon have a deep run – granted, I’m a bit concerned with their lack of experience. Nevertheless, PSG Talon should take care of business on Tuesday.

G2 Esports vs LOUD

When: Tuesday, May 2, at 16:00 BST

G2 Esports will kick off their quest for the organisation’s second MSI title in the Play-In stage after failing to win the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) title. But despite failing to win the LEC 2023 Spring, G2 Esports travel to London as the strongest European roster.

Priced at just 1.25 to qualify from the Play-In stage, G2 are considered one of the strongest squads in the opening stage of the tournament and rightly so. They should’ve won the LEC and would have done it had G2 Esports not choked against MAD Lions in the playoffs.

MAD Lions ended up claiming the throne, so it’s not like MAD are a bad team, but based on what we’ve seen over the season, G2 Esports were the clear best-performing European LoL team. So what are their chances to do well at the MSI, or more specifically, in their upcoming series against LOUD?

Some might be bearish on G2 Esports due to their slip-up in LEC 2023 Spring Playoffs, but even that loss doesn’t change the fact that G2 were by far the best-performing team in the LEC. Moreover, this squad fields highly experienced players, they have a good read on the meta and play extremely well as a team.

LOUD aren’t without any good qualities either, but they’re objectively much weaker than G2. One thing that could work in LOUD’s favour is their aggression which can lead to chaotic games – but out of all teams, G2 Esports don’t mind getting themselves in a brawl, and they often do well in such games.

The offered betting odds look about right.
