The League of Legends Pro League (LPL) 2023 Summer Playoffs continue on Friday, July 21, with the second Round 1 match between Royal Never Give Up and Ninjas in Pyjamas. The winner will advance to face Weibo Gaming in the second round of the playoffs and take one step closer to claiming the LPL 2023 Summer throne.
According to the latest LoL esports betting odds, Royal Never Give Up are priced as the favourites to defeat Ninjas in Pyjamas, which, even though NiP won their last meeting with RNG makes a lot of sense.
Royal Never Give Up vs Ninjas in Pyjamas Betting Preview
When: Friday, July 21, 17:00 CST
Royal Never Give Up and Ninjas in Pyjamas are set to clash on Friday, July 21, in the first round of LPL 2023 Summer Playoffs. It’ll mark their second meeting of the split and the first since LPL 2023 Summer Week 6, when Ninjas in Pyjamas upset Royal Never Give Up (2-1).
Since that win, Ninjas in Pyjamas have played four games and have won one (2-0 against Rare Atom) but lost the remaining three against Bilibili Gaming (0-2), FunPlus Phoenix (0-2), and LNG Esports (0-2). Meanwhile, Royal Never Give Up have put together a 2-2 run over the same stretch with wins against Team WE (2-1) and LGD Gaming (2-0) and two defeats against Weibo Gaming (1-2), and the LPL 2023 Summer regular season champions, Bilibili Gaming (1-2).
Ninjas in Pyjamas Are Too Weak
Ninjas in Pyjamas have reached LPL 2023 Summer Playoffs with the skin of their teeth, finishing the regular season with a 7-9 record, one win above the cutoff line. Over the 16 games played, they’ve won 42% of maps played (15-21) and were particularly disappointing against stronger teams.
The main reason why NiP have made it to the LPL 2023 Summer playoffs was their strong record and consistency against bottom teams. But while that was enough to end the season inside the top 10, it doesn’t change the fact that NiP are the weakest team to reach the postseason.
The big reason why NiP haven’t accomplished much this split is their terrible early game – where they rank as one of the worst teams in the LPL 2023 Summer. A -1976.4 GD@10, and -2329.2 GD@20 ranks NiP 17th in the LPL.
This number is a bit skewed because NiP got blasted by top teams, but when we talk about NiP’s chances to do well in the LPL 2023 Summer Playoffs, their performance against stronger opponents is all that matters.
Royal Never Give Up Are Good (Not Great)
Royal Never Give Up finished LPL 2023 Summer regular season in seventh place, with an 8-8 record and a 22-18 map differential (55% win rate). Over the season, RNG have held on well and did some damage as underdogs, but outside of their flashes of greatness, RNG have proven to not be at the same level as the top contenders.
Royal Never Give Up are the prime example of a team that is “good but not great” – a team that will defeat lesser opponents and look good against tougher teams, but never have a good chance to defeat the top dogs. On that note, I will be more than ready to fade RNG when they face off against Weibo Gaming, but first, RNG have to make it past Ninjas in Pyjamas.
With how low I view Royal Never Give Up, it would seem like fading them here would be the play. But as little hope as I have in RNG’s chances to finish the LPL 2023 Summer Playoffs high, they’re still a class above Ninjas in Pyjamas.
Ninjas in Pyjamas are objectively the weakest team to have made it to the LPL 2023 Summer Playoffs, and unless something goes terribly wrong for Royal Never Give Up, this game shouldn’t offer any surprises.
NiP’s upset against RNG in Week 6 of the regular season means very little in regards to which of the two teams is stronger, and as much as it would be exciting to see another upset, NiP simply don’t have the tools to deal with RNG or any other playoff team.
