When is the First CS2 Major?

The release of Counter-Strike 2 in September 2023 has officially ended the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive era, which spanned over 11 years, and with it, the Counter-Strike esports scene transitioned to a new game.

That also means that BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023 was the final Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major and the final chance for the squads to etch their names into the CS:GO competitive history.

Now that the CS:GO esports era is in the rearview mirror, the community can look ahead at what Counter-Strike 2 will bring, and while there are plenty of big CS2 events on the schedule, the big question is – When is the first CS2 Major scheduled for?

Who Will Host The First CS2 Major?

Even before we fully transitioned to Counter-Strike 2, Valve has already started making plans for the next Major Championship – the PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024, which was announced in March 2023.

Valve choose PGL to host the first CS2 Major after the Romanian esports tournament organisers successfully hosted the PGL Major Kraków 2017, PGL Major Stockholm 2021, and PGL Major Antwerp 2022, however, there were some mixed feelings about Valve’s decision due to previous technical difficulties at PGL Majors.

When Is The First CS2 Major?

As confirmed by PGL on March 28, 2023, the PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024 will take place on March 17-31, at Royal Arena, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024 Format

Even though Valve announced format changes for future CS2 tournaments, those haven’t affected the CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024. The Major will use a similar format to previous Majors, welcoming 24 Counter-Strike squads, who will be divided into three groups based on their performance in the Regional Major Rankings (RMR) events.

The tournament will be divided into three stages – Opening Stage, Elimination Stage, and Playoffs. Unfortunately, the exact format of the games has yet to be confirmed, but we can expect it to be similar or the same as in previous CS Majors.

Opening Stage (March 17-20, 2024)

  • 16 Counter-Strike 2 squads

  • Top eight teams advance to the Elimination Stage

  • Bottom eight teams get eliminated

Elimination Stage (March 21-24, 2024)

  • 16 Counter-Strike 2 squads

  • Top eight teams advance to the Playoffs

  • Bottom eight teams get eliminated

Playoffs (March 28-31, 2024)

  • Eight Counter-Strike 2 squads

  • Single-elimination bracket

  • All matches are best-of-three (Bo3)

The three stages are expected to be named Challengers Stage, Legends Stage, and Champions Stage.
